Vidja Games

What is Gee's fundamental argument?

"I argue that schools, workplaces, families, and academic researchers have a lot to learn about learning from good computer and video games.'

What do agree or disagree with?

Video games are a great learning to tool that increase creativity, work with problem solving skills, and introduce new information.

How does it impact what you believe about good teaching?

Good teaching can involve being open to new ideas to find just another way for students to learn.

How can a program like SCRATCH be used in your classroom?

Asking students to design a game for their classmates to play for learning purposes will
1) help the student learn the information involved in the game
and
2) help familiarize the student with computers and technology

My Thoughts....

The blogging assignment reminded me how difficult writing can be for elementary students. Blogging will benefit younger students by giving them another form of media to practice writing and ultimately become better writers. I do think, however, that blogging should be used in balance with traditional pencil and paper essays, since they will play a large role in the remainder of their school careers.

Scratch....ow

I found an interesting project featuring Garfield and Oddie on a trip to Poland. I'd like to do something similar to this except featuring different characters and a new location.

Convergence Media

Convergence Media = where OLD & NEW media COLLIDE
also, commercial culture and ammatuer culture

implications of convergence culture - social issues, attention deficit

Many schools see 'digital tools' as distractions. Most of these institutions are unwilling to work with there students to incorporate technology into the lessons. I believe it would benefiscial to do so in order to give students a basis of familiarity with their work. This would encourage more participation.

Victorian Robots?

As interesting as the site was I'm positively sure the site was intended to generate money. There are advertisments littering the site for things completely irrelevant to Victorian robots, such as myspace. Also, there's a link at the bottom of the page to buy t-shirts. *sigh* When will the serious text-book research be done on Victorian robots?!

Storybird

I really enjoyed my creative writing classes in highschool and this site, Storybird, could be used as another aspect of teaching that class. I'd assign students to create their own story through the site. It could also be used in elementary schools to introduce younger kids to the field of creative writing.

the white and black i thought sort of reminded me of the dreary New England winters and that's why I used that color scheme, not because I was lazy and it was default

My Web Quest

CaN yOu FiNd ThE lInK?

Would Socrates approve of WebQuests?

"He believed that learning came from within and that the best and most lasting way to bring latent knowledge to awareness was through the process of continual questioning and unconventional inquiry. For Socrates, answers were always steps on the way to deeper questions. (Cookson)"

Socrates put all emphasis on questioning and, thus, advancing through finding answers. I believed he'd approve of our advanced technology because it allows most people to find the answer to almost any question at Sonic-the-Hedgehog quick speed (I grow weary of the saying: lightning quick speed). Web Quests extension are just another of that ability.

Web Quest I Shall....ADAPT!

The Salem Witch Trials

http://www.geocities.com/webquestsonline/index.htm

I plan to rework the task because I do not find it engaging for students. The current assignment give every group of students (by which the class is divided) the exact same research project. This limits the learning to one area when the projects are presented and alo affords students the oppurtunity to do less work. Not to mention it's just boring, ecspecially with a subject with as much information such as the Salem Witch Trials. Under "Cognitive Level of Task" on the Web Quest Rubric the highest amount of points given is award to Web Quests that engage their students. This Web Quest, I believe, does not, but has the potential to. I will change the assignment to give each group a different research project. This will allow much more information to come across these students' desks.

Pro-Essay

Although I believe that photo essays are good assignments that stimulate student creativity (NETS standard 1) and familiarize them with teachnology, writing is too inavaluable a skill to be completely replaced. Writing is necessary for almost every coarse taken in school and most careers today. Sadly, the world has already produced too many weak writers. Technology does need to be taught and incorporated into the classroom but writer needs to hold the greater emphasis.

Tales from Earthsea

In Anime Society this week we watched the Studio Ghibli film Gedo senki or Tales from Earthsea. It was directed and written fpr the screen (in-part) by Goro Miyazaki, son of the legendary Japanese animation director/writer/animator Hayao Miyazaki. First off, I would like to say that this movie was so visually pleasing that I was left speechless at times. The opening scenes features a mid-air battle between dragons that send a chill down any animation-enthusiast's spine. However, quality in animation is something we simply come to expect from Studio Ghibli, though I don't think this means we shouldn't honor it anyway.

The film itself is a pleasing picture. It has an interesting plot, likable, even epic, characters, and an atmosphere about it that makes you feel as if you could walk the magical lands in-which the film takes place. However, it moves at a surprisingly slow pace. The middle of the movie drags on for longer than it should and, as a result, it's significantly harder to take the ending seriously. This could have fixed, I think, by adding a few more action sequences in the middle. The combat the film does feature is breath-taking in both animation and choreography.

I've yet to watch the original Japanese version of the film because of technical difficulties but I can say that Buena Vista Home Entertainment really supplied an great cast. There were excellent performances across the board but the two most notable were from Timothy Dalton, who plays the guiding figure of Ged or Sparrowhawk, and from Willem Dafoe, who plays the evil villian Lord Cob. Cheech Marin also provides a voice for the film, getting back to a more distinguished voice acting career, such as his role in Oliver & Company, rather than his recent projects, for instance the less than anticipated Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

Overall, Gedo senki is a good movie but, I believe, it is ultimately Goro Miyazaki trying to replicate what his father accomplished with Mononoke-hime (Princess Mononoke). I would deem Gedo senki an excellent visual successor to Princess Mononoke but I'd say little more than that. I also have to say that I am not being completely fair. if any other animation studio, other than Ghibli, had produced this film I'd be less critical. However, thanks to Ghibli's other brillant directors ( Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata) I expect more from them. Also, This is Goro Miyazaki first film, and taking that into consideration it is really done quite well.

Dr. Miland Brown's "World History Blog" supplies students with an excellent amount of historical information and knowledge. Not only that, but his reflections help students understand the greater themes and underlying meanings of certain historical events.

http://www.worldhistoryblog.com/

The first NETS-T principal is to "facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity." I will allow students a certain amount of autonomy with they technology work, which will leave them plenty of room for free thought. Freedom and technology is the perfect combination to get the creative juices flowing. Also, it was stated that many children can learn more alone on a computer in an hour than they can all day in the classroom.

Another foundation of NETS-T is to "engage in professional growth and leadership." Once students get a taste of success with technology they may be inspired to work harder in the classroom and within their own lives.
